Located in the province Huari to 3.185msnm, 110 kilometers to the southeast of Huaraz, to approximately 3 hours 30 minutes in car. It was discovered by Julio Cesar Tello in 1919, and declared by the UNESCO like Cultural Patrimony of the Humanity in 1985, The magic-religious center of Chavín was built approximately in the year 327 B.C. Its walls they are of stone and its pyramidal structures, what has generated controversy regarding the function that would have had the building: a temple?, a strength?.
The temple whose plant is rectangular in a way pyramidal truncates, it's built with enormous blocks of stones symmetrical, insureds with wedges of the same material and stone mortar.
Inside the Old Temple to the center, it is the denominated gallery Lanzón, where exist a stone carved in form of gigantic tip of lance of 4,6 m of high, representing a character with feline attributes, bird and snake.
The interior galleries are formed of walls of stones. To the view, originally, they were plastered with mud and colored. It has like roof, big potteries that it not only completed their architectural function, but rather it was also decorated with religious reasons.
There are other contemporary galleries to the Old Temple; such as, the camp, the offerings, the perrons, the cupboards, the labyrinths of the bat and of the captive and the double bracket.
Chavin was one of the first American cultures, contemporary with the Olmecan in Mexico. It is remarkable the development level that reached in agriculture, architecture and ceramic, as well as in their administrative capacity, what allowed to dominate great part of the north and the center of the Peru. Maybe in that resides the importance of the castle of Chavin of Huantar in their strategic location as contact point among coast, mountain range and jungle. For us, however, the monumental discovered remains in 1919 for the Peruvian archaeologist Julio C. Tello, has the value to be an indispensable part of our history. |
